Completing the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the initial step to determine your
eligibility for federal aid and
many state and institutional
need-based aid programs.
It is a questionnaire that helps
your school's financial aid office
calculate financial need and determine
what aid may be available to you.
The FAFSA is available from any
financial aid office, the public
library, by telephone at 1-800-4FED-AID
(1-800-433-3243), or online at
www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Check the deadlines! The FAFSA
clearly lists the deadlines for
federal and state aid. These deadlines
can differ between individual
states and schools.
Normally, students should not
submit the FAFSA to be processed
before January 1.
Note: A student who has previously completed the FAFSA should have received a personal identification number (PIN) from Federal Student Aid Programs. If that PIN has been misplaced, the student may apply for a new PIN electronically at
www.pin.ed.gov.
The new PIN will be mailed from
Federal Student Aid Programs
seven to ten days after it is
requested. This PIN can be used
to check on the status of a FAFSA
and can also be used to electronically
sign government loan forms, such
as a
Federal Stafford Loan or Federal
PLUS Loan Master Promissory Note.
